Buster Welch. My friend.
I’m J R Taylor.
I showed Cutting horses for several years he at which time I knew Buster very well.
I turned back for him many times at the Cuttings.
He was so generous to me and others with his knowledge and expertise of the cutting horse.
One thing I will always remember him saying, “You don’t have to outrun the cow to head her. She is not going to get away. There is an ocean on each side”.
I had been working and showing cutters for Leroy Ashcraft.
During my years of knowing Buster I had an opportunity to move to Sweetwater, Texas to show Heleo for Brooks Ranches. At that time Buster
had his “Cutting School” at Sweetwater.
He told me I should go to the lumber yard and get two big red bricks. I asked why I should do such a thing?
He said, “I should put the bricks in each hip pocket”.
I was still puzzled at such a request.
I asked, “Why would I do that”?
He said, “ Because the wind blows so hard at Sweetwater and I was a slight built fellow. I might just blow away when a big strong wind came up”.
It never failed. Early in the morning as the sun can up it would be a beautiful peaceful day. By 8:00 to 8:30 am the wind would be howling.
He was right.
That became a “joke” told when the guys gathered at the Cuttings.
Another thing I will always remember Buster telling about the Cutting horse.
The horse who makes the most turns to head a cow will usually win that show. If you think about it, that is true.
Buster had lots of “Cutting Horse” wisdoms and sayings.
He was a great friend. A true horseman and a great person.
He will be missed by all in the cutting horse tworld.
I am one of the lucky ones who knew him.

We here in Australia are saddened to hear of Busters passing, I attended the Futurity here in Australia when he visited and was lucky enough to show there on a horse sired by Wagon Cook that Robert Mackay brought while he was at Busters in the USA called Clover Captain Cook. To his family, especially Josh and Amy King, my sympathies are with you all and another legend has left us.

Last year my husband Jeff Ashlock and I were in Abilene. My husband said " hey let's go see Buster". I said Buster who. My husband said Buster Welch. I said THE BUSTER WELCH! I had watched Buster cut since I was a very young girl. He was my IDOL. I couldn't believe I was going to get to meet this legend. So my husband and I went to Buster's house. The house keeper let us in and told us Buster was in his bedroom and pointed us in the direction. He is was lying in his bed. We sat down and I held his hand the whole time. He was waiting on his family to take him out to dinner. My husband and I got up to leave. I learned over and gave Mr. Welch a kiss on his forehead. I was so honored to meet this man. My husband and I were saddened by his passing. We know he is in heaven looking down on all of us. God Blessed this man. My you rest in peace Mr Welch. .

I am a retired banker of 45 years. During this time in Sweetwater, it was a privilege and honor to have Buster as a customer. I enjoyed watching him operate his business in a very successful way. I have missed those fun times. If Buster had told me a rooster could pull a freight train, we’d better hitch it up! What a great friend and man he was. My prayers go out to his family, he will always be in our hearts.
Sincerely, Larry Upshaw

My dad was Bob Miller, from Minnesota/South Dakota. My dad’s relationship with Buster was one of business at first. That relationship quickly turned to a friendship spanning the many miles between them. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Buster face to face, I spoke with him over the phone only few times when he would call and ask for my dad. My mom and brother’s traveled with my dad on cattle buying trips to Texas and had the pleasure of riding horse with Buster on his ranch. My dad always spoke of riding Anchalla when he visited, we have a picture of my dad riding him. My mom remembers riding across the ridge to the lodge, she said it was a 10 mile ride. All great memories of their time together and the hospitality that Buster gave my family over the years. My dad suffered a stroke in 2011 and later passed away in 2016. Buster made a point of calling me many times to check up on my dad and his progress. I am so grateful for his concern for my dad and I enjoyed getting to know him during that time, the conversations we had, and I looked forward to his phone calls. Speaking with him, I can see why my dad became friends with Buster.
My family and I extend prayers of sympathy to his family. Blessed be his memory.

My earliest memories include Buster, Ginger, Ken,Greg, Ruth Ann (Georgia Gale wasn't even born). In the early 1950s my Dad, June Mitchell, and mother, Bill Mitchell, spent quality time together with them. They were great friends and all had a lasting impact on me. Little did I know what the future would hold as I watched Buster and June work horses together. Buster attended both my Dad and Mother's funeral. He never forgot his friends. God bless all of Buster's family and friends and may they carry on the legacy. Blessings, Wallace Mitchell

My father was a drifter of sorts, and fell into a fabulous place when he went to work for Buster!! Mom and I were hauling a horse to one of his current employees from Oregon. Buster, never meeting a stranger, invited us in to the cookhouse and proceeded to visit about our family and family history. Turns out he was looking for a hand to work for him. We proceeded to go home, pick up Dad, and return to the Boyd ranch the following week for my Dad to meet/interview with Buster. Loved watching him work a horse!! No matter if in a pasture or an arena. He will always be the master!!

In 1998 or 1999 I was sitting in a box in Will Rodgers during a go-round and Buster sat down in next box but was only an arms length away, Immediately he introduced himself to me, a nobody in the eyes of most in trhe cutting horse industry. At next cattle change he initiated conversation asking me questions about me. Never in the next two or three hours did he say anything that self promoted. After a bit I asked him some questions as to how to do some things and he very freely explained the answer in a simple way I could understand. One of the most humble people I ever met. I have remembered thatt day very fondly..
RIP BUSTER

Watching Buster work cattle was like watching a wizard weave a calming spell. I once heard Buster say that you had to be a part of the horse, watching him work they did meld into one. I loved listening to Buster tell his stories and laugh with his brother. I am glad Uncle Buster and Uncle Daryl are together again but sad for us. Happy trails Uncle Buster until we meet again.
