Zack Stockton, 94, of Abilene, passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013 at Royal Estates in Abilene. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 5, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 6, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Clifford S. Stewart and Rev. Janice Six officiating.
Graveside services will be in Kerens Cemetery in Kerens, Navarro County, Texas on Saturday, December 7, following a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Paschal Funeral Home Chapel in Kerens.
He was born February 28, 1919 to Percy and Fannie Stockton in Kerens, TX. He graduated from Kerens High School in 1936, and from The University of Texas in 1940. He entered the US Army in 1940 with the 36th Division of the Texas National Guard. Later he went overseas to Europe with the 9th Armored Division. After WWII he again joined the 36th Division, Texas National Guard and served an additional 15 years, and ended his 23 years of military service with 3 years in the Army Reserves. He married Gelene Reed in Kerens on August 3, 1947. The family moved to Abilene in 1958 where he was employed in the real estate and the furniture business until his retirement from Andrews Furniture Company in 1979.
He is survived by his sons Scott and wife Janet of Richardson, TX, and Stephen and wife Vonna of Golden, CO.; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Autumn Chavez and husband Robbie and her sons Caden and Jack of Frisco, TX,: Tommy Stockton of Dallas, TX.; Jacob, Wesley, and Kevin Stockton of Golden, CO.; sister Cynthia Jaffe of Perth, Australia; brother John and wife Jan Stockton of Sun City West, AZ; and sister-in-law Frances Stockton of Portland, OR, and several cousins, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gelene, his parents and two brothers, Coates and William Stockton.
He was a member of First Central Presbyterian Church and the Friendly Class, Military Officers of America Association, Central Texas Gem and Mineral Society, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program. He enjoyed fishing at the Texas gulf coast, golf, and RV traveling with family and friends.
