Winona Yvonne Winslett Johnson passed away on August 18, 2018 in Abilene.
Visitation will be on Tuesday evening from 6-8, August 21, 2018 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. August 22 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home with James Denham and Terry Crane officiating. Burial will follow at the Oplin Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Winona was born at Brown Ranch, Coleman County to S.C. “Pete” and Fay Winslett. She attended and graduated from Mozelle High School where she was an avid basketball player. She attended Tarleton State University, but returned home due to the death of her brother. She worked at First Coleman National Bank and the Production Credit Association. She married Herbert Lowell Johnson on September 12, 1959 in Southern Coleman County. Winona was an avid musician and played the piano by ear. She even played at Cahoots Restaurant for several years. She dedicated her life to supporting her husband and her two children in their endeavors. She was the 4-H leader for the Oplin 4-H Club for 14 years and was awarded the Texas Salute for Excellence for her volunteer service. She was also awarded her honorary Chapter Farmer degree for her dedication to the FFA program. She was a devoted member of the Oplin Church of Christ. Winona was known for always having a story or a song.
Winona was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Rex.
Winona is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Lowell, her son Larry Chris and wife Beverly of Springtown, her daughter Tonya Fay Eppright and husband James David of Cost, her two sisters, Elda Fay Lindly of Early and Janis Grant and husband James of Baird. She is also survived by her 3 loving grandchildren, Shayna McKenzie and Sterling Tripp Johnson of Springtown, and Cullen Harris Eppright of College Station.
Pallbearers will be Mance “Buzzy” Mitchell, Glen Sansom, Sidney Grant, Jeff Lindly, Jackie May, and Blan May. Honorary pallbearers will be Button May and Ricky Johnson.
Memorials can be made to the Oplin Cemetery Association c/o Doug Campbell 19176 FM 604 S, Clyde, Texas 79541, Lawn Church of Christ or Highway 36 Church of Christ, or a charity of one’s choice.
