William Franklin Agnew

1934 — November 21, 2008

William F. Agnew passed away at Hendrick Memorial Center on November 21, 2008, after a brief and unexpected illness. He was better known to his family, friends, and all who loved him, as "Bill." Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the University Church of Christ. Dr. Bill Young, assisted by Dr. Don Wilson, will officiate. Dr. Rex Anderson, Jr. will read scripture. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Bill was born on July 30, 1934 in Brownwood, Texas to the late Ray and Alta Agnew. He graduated from High School in Rising Star. Bill was a 1955 graduate of Abilene Christian University and a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. He married Nancy Oldham on December 30, 1952 at the University Church of Christ. He was the son and grandson of a grocer, and owned and operated Agnew Superette, located initially in a shopping area on Ambler, and later on his property at the intersection of Ambler and Madison. The Superette was well known to at least two generations of friends and customers, all of whom Bill loved and respected. Many college students, whom Bill enjoyed, attribute his employment of them in school as being a significant factor in obtaining their education. Bill was a sincere, caring, generous man, who never met a stranger. He was described as one who lived his life transparently, and was the same to both the privileged and downcast. In particular, one individual described him as being the person who taught him how to interact with those in all sets of circumstances, and that few realized how he helped so many others either financially, or with personal problems. Preceding him in death were his father and mother Ray Agnew and Alta (Burrus) Agnew; his son, David Michael Agnew on February 4, 2007; Nancy's mother, Laura Irene Oldham, one brother, Burt Agnew, and a sister-in-law, Helen Rhodes. Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy Agnew, of Abilene; one daughter, Carol Agnew Holliman and her husband Gary, of Terrell, Texas; one grandson, Michael William Agnew, of Abilene and San Antonio; one brother, Pat Agnew and his wife Carolyn, of Abilene; a sister, Edith Bibb and her husband Kenneth, of Rising Star; two sisters-in-law, Louise Swim, of Dallas and Rosita Lazar, of Boynton Beach, Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Pallbearers will be Dr. Jimmy McNeil, Tommy Morris, Johnny Jones, Wayne Bramhall, Garnie Hatch, Scott Bishop and Billy Don Womack. Honorary pallbearers will be lifetime friend, Don Etter, Larry Wishard, of Aurora, Colorado, Don Baber, James Cobb, Danny Fleming, Bob Bailey, Gary Sitton, and Jeff Huckabee. Memorials may be made in honor of Bill Agnew to the donor's favorite charity. Bill, in a quiet way, touched the lives of countless members of the community.
