Willene Pounds, 85, died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in a local care center. A graveside service, with Reverend Barry Glover officiating, will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday in Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. There will be a visitation at the Funeral Home from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday.
Willene was born January 5, 1922 in Burke, Tennessee to L. Selby and Nancy Curley Selby. She graduated from high school in Big Lick, Tennessee and became a file clerk for the Office of Strategic Services, now the C.I.A., during WW II in Washington, D.C. She married Henry Clay Pounds in Washington, D.C. in 1944 and the couple moved to Abilene during 1945, where Mrs. Pounds became a mother and homemaker. She was a Presbyterian.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Joe and Leonard Selby, a sister, Martha Easterling and a daughter, Virginia Hayden. Survivors include: two sons, Tommy Pounds of Abilene and Bobby Pounds of Columbus, Georgia; three daughters, Mary Gilbreth and husband Jerry of Abilene, Betty Pounds of Abilene and Nancy Hooper of Abilene; a sister-in-law, Annie B. Sanders of Abilene; thirteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
