Wilda Maxine Allen McCowen, 83, passed away peacefully, taking her last breath and entered her Saviors' arms on November 5, 2009 surrounded by her loving family and friends. Her task on this earth began July 18, 1926 in China Grove community in Scurry County Texas. She was the second of four children born to Harry and Bettie Allen. She attended school in Snyder and graduated in May 1944. She worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone where she met Roy Edmon McCowen and they were married on May 8, 1949.
Wilda and Roy settled in the Wylie community in 1965 and Wilda became very active in many areas of community and Christian service. She was involved in the Wylie PTO, Wylie 4-H Club, Wylie and Potosi Home Extension Clubs and Wylie Baptist Church, where she was a member for 44 years. She served on the teller committee, Sunday School teacher, PEP club, and sang in the choir for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Bettie Allen, her husband Roy McCowen, November 11, 2001, by her youngest son, Kyle Edmon McCowen, February 1, 1983 and by her eldest daughter, Karen Roylene Levrets, January 11, 2005 and one sister, Elwanda Allen.
Wilda was a homemaker who loved raising her family on their farm south of Wylie. She enjoyed sewing and was the historian of both the McCowen and Allen families. Most of all, she loved her family and friends. She truly cared for others and wanted them to know it.
She is survived by one son Kerry Allen McCowen and wife Deb of Thornton, Colorado and one daughter Kelly Maxine Farmer and husband Mike of Abilene; seven grandchildren, Shannon Levrets and wife Jennifer of View, Cody Roy Levrets and wife Tangie of Tyler, Joshua Edmon McCowen of Whiteman AFB, Missouri, Jaime Elaine McCowen of Denver, Colorado, Kyle Jaron Farmer, Paige Farmer, and Brooke Farmer all of Abilene; and five great-grandchildren Kristin and Reagan Levrets of View, Morgan and Jayden Levrets of Tyler and Kyle Edmon McCowen of Plymouth, Indiana.
She is also survived by one sister, Nelda Allen Fields of Snyder and one brother Keith Allen and wife Jeanelle of Rockwall and many nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Glenn McCowen, Clint McCowen, Don McCowen, Shawn McCowen, Bobby McCowen, Darren McCowen, Ronald Bratton, and John Fanning. Honorary pallbearers will be the rest of the Allen, Dunn, Mathis and McCowen nephews, cousins and brothers-in-law.
Wilda will be remembered for her matter of fact advice and wisdom, home remedies, letters and notes of hope and encouragement and strong courage and faith in the midst of good and bad times.
Visitation will be Sunday November 8th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Services will be Monday November 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Wylie Baptist Church with the Rev. Lee Fuller and Rick Grant officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Memorial Park.
