Some day the silver cord will break,
And I no more as now shall sing;
But, O the joy when I shall wake
Within the presence of the King!
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story, saved by grace:
And I shall see Him face to face,
And tell the story, saved by grace.
Wayne Burt, our beloved husband, daddy and grandpa has gone to be with the Giver of that Grace!
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 5, in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Dennis Wayne Burt Sr. was born to E.V. Burt and Ollie Blanche Rister Burt on August 5, 1927, in Abilene, Texas. He attended Abilene schools and at age 17 served in the Navy Construction Battalion in China. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Returning to Abilene, he attended Draughons and Gail Business College. He married June Clark on October 19, 1947 in Abilene, at Corinth Baptist Church. He graduated from Bible College in Fort Worth, where he was ordained to preach the gospel. The Lord led Wayne to the state of his grandparents, Mississippi, where revivals were held and he was privileged to baptize many. For the next 15 years, Wayne led more people to Christ by pastoring several more churches in Texas and Louisiana.
Moving back to Abilene in 1965, he worked for several years at Andrews Furniture, where he was honored as top salesman, also receiving first prize in public speaking from the Dale Carnegie Course.
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1976, the Lord gave him strength to endure the pain and keep going. The next years were spent working in real estate and operating a successful picture frame business in the Dallas and Fort Worth area.
After his wife June’s retirement in 1989 from Southwestern Bell, they returned to Abilene, where he was involved in the used car business and owned Wayne Burt Enterprise Car Sales.
His love of the Bible was his passion, and when health issues prevented attending services, he became a dedicated viewer of many TV ministries, which he would record and share with family and friends. After being diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, in November 2013, he chose to live each remaining day to the fullest encouraging people in the Lord.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Francis Scott, Evelyn Faulks, and brother Gene Burt.
He is survived by his wife of 66 blessed years, June; children Linda Lane, Shirley King (Dennis), Dennis Burt, Jr. and Robert Burt; grandchildren Robert Lindquist, Stacy Lindquist (Isela), Denny Marshall (Melynda), Kelly King Curtis (Ty), Casey King, Jeremy Burt (Stephanie) and Gabriel Burt; and great-grandchildren Cole, Isabella, Stacy Lynn, William, Creighton and Kage, as well as a special sister-in-law, Shirley Plyant, and nephew, Arthur Pylant.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to the Wounded Warriors Project.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the “Hospice of the Big Country”: Chaplain Burtis Williams, Dr. Dawson, Louisa, Susan, Kisha, and Teri. Also, the many ‘Prayer Warriors’: nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and Betty Blythe’s United Methodist Church prayer group of Bowie, Texas.
