W. P. Hicks

1932 — July 24, 2014

W.P. (Dub) Hicks W.P. (Dub) Hicks, 81, of Abilene, Texas, business owner and devoted husband, died in his home after an extended illness. A celebration of Dub’s life will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, August 2nd, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Dub was born in Abilene on November 11th, 1932 to Clarence and Lorene Hicks. He served his country as a Seaman in the Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the Navy Destroyer USS Greene DD-711. Throughout his life, Dub spoke fondly of the experiences he gained while serving in the Navy. Upon his Honorable Discharge, Dub returned to Abilene and married Elizabeth Marvin, and to that union came three beautiful children, Dub, Sharon and Kathy, whom he proudly watched grow into successful adults. For a decade he was a sales representative for Armour in Victoria, Texas, and then transitioned to Swift in Abilene where he worked for eleven years. Dub became a business owner with the purchase of Mackey’s Taco. He then built Bingos, a small, but thriving Mexican food restaurant. Over the course of the next several years, he added several other businesses to his portfolio including Minute Stops convenience stores, Papa Bears, The Executive Club, and La Cantina Restaurant. In 1973 he changed the name of La Cantina to Dos Amigos, and this restaurant became the focus of his business life for the next twenty years. Early on in his ownership of Dos Amigos, Dub met and married Cindy Brunk. Dub and Cindy were inseparable throughout life. Dub sold Dos Amigos in 1992, and together he and Cindy purchased real estate which included Flair Apartments and a number of commercial properties. Side by side they managed these real estate holdings until his death. Those who knew Dub sought his wisdom and advice in times of need, and he was always there. His spirit, good humor and irascible nature were solidly fixed to his soul. Dub’s philosophy was “work hard, play hard, love hard”. Dub was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lorene Hicks; son, Dub Hicks; sisters, Ginna Hicks Isaacs and Daisy Hicks Waggoner; and son-in-law, Johnny Hazlewood. Dub is survived by his wife, Cindy Hicks; children, Sharon Hazlewood of Combine, Texas, and Kathy Oliver and husband Lee of Clyde, Texas; brother, Glenn Hicks of Abilene; sister, Sandra Chrane and husband Gary of Dudley, Texas; three grandchildren, Jared Oliver and wife Jenny of Aledo, Texas, Lindsey Oliver of Abilene, and Chris Hazlewood of Combine, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Rylan and Reid Oliver of Aledo, Texas.
