Virlent Marion Whaley, Jr., 64, of Abilene, died Monday, October 5, 2009 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home. Following the funeral service, Mr. Whaley will be cremated and his ashes interred at a later date at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene.
October 13, 1944, Virlent was born in Bluefield, West Virginia to Virlent and Celia (Sparks) Whaley. He served in the United States Air force as an aircraft mechanic for 22 years. Virlent was a Vietnam Veteran. After retiring from the Air force, he worked for Boeing for five years. Virlent married Ruth Ann Hook on November 10, 1962 in Columbus, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Virlent is survived by his wife, Ruth Whaley, of Abilene; two sons, Virlent Eugene Whaley and wife Darlene, of Ft. Worth, David Gerald Whaley and wife Edyie, of Highland Village; two daughters, Ruth Ann Ramos and husband Elmer, of Abilene and Deborah Lynn Whaley, also of Abilene; ten grandchildren, Samantha, Matthew and Holly, Bridgette, Haley, Erik and Erin, Jessica, Michelle and Leah; one great-grandchild, Natalie; one brother and two sisters.
