Vernis Parkinson, 89, died Sunday, May 13, 2007 in Big Spring, Texas. Graveside services will be at 3:00 pm today, Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Elmwood Memorial Park, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Larry Baird will officiate.
Vernis was born October 23, 1917 in Paint Rock, Texas to Elmer Edward Parkinson and Henrietta (Kendrix) Parkinson. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in Germany. April 18, 1970, Vernis married Myrtle Morrison in Abilene. She preceded him in death in 1991. He was employed by Tex Dot as a machinery operator for many years. Vernis was a longtime resident of Abilene, a member of the Abundant Life Apostolic Ministries and the VFW.
Preceding Vernis in death were his parents, his wife, two brothers, William and Marvin Parkinson, and one sister Llewellyn Ganoe. He is survived by his daughter, Wanda Vinson and her husband, Fred of Abilene; two sisters, June Tenny of San Angelo and Grace Ratcliff of Las Vegas, Nevada; four grandchildren, Shawn Earl and her husband Junior, Freddie Vinson and his wife Jennifer, Vontese Vinson and Justin Vinson; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
