Velma Howell, of Abilene, formerly of Dallas, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009 at the age of 97. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. today, Friday, January 30, 2009 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 31, in the Laurel Land Chapel, 6000 S.R.L. Thornton Freeway, Dallas, Texas. Burial will follow in Laurel Land Memorial Park. Velma was born in Winters, Texas on May 5, 1911 to the late Rube and Lula (Hamilton) Morgan. She was one of ten children. During World War II, Velma was a "Rosie Riveter" in Dallas; she helped build airplanes for the war. She worked for the Dallas Independent School District as a School Cafeteria Manager for approximately 15 years. Velma moved to Abilene from Duncanville, Texas nine years ago. While in Abilene she was a member of Baker Heights Church of Christ. She was a member of the Clark Road Church of Christ, formerly the Saner Avenue Church of Christ, while living in the Duncanville and Dallas area. Pink was Velma's favorite color and the family will wear pink in her honor at the funeral service. If any of her friends and those who attend the funeral would like to wear pink also, please feel free to do so. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rube and Lula Morgan; her husband, Ralph Howell on December 6, 1968; four sisters and two brothers. Velma is survived by one son, Aubrey Northcutt and his wife Charlotte, of Duncanville; two daughters, Jean Jones and her husband J.W., also of Duncanville, Kathy Turner and her husband Mike, of Abilene; three brothers, Earl Morgan, of Amherst, Texas, Horace Morgan and his wife Ellen, of Muleshoe, Texas and Red Morgan and his wife Charlene, of Amherst, Texas; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made in honor of Velma Howell to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, Texas 79601; Meals on Wheels, 717 North 10th Street, Abilene, Texas 79601; or to the donor's favorite charity.
