Velma Baker Cosper Sutton, 87, of Abilene, passed away Sunday, January 10, 2010. Graveside services, with Mike Hill officiating, will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
Velma was born on November 9, 1922 in Hawley, Texas to James W. Baker and Annie (Cummings) Baker. She attended Hawley High School, where she played basketball and graduated in 1940. In the 1950's and 60's she was an administrator of Stewart Nursing Home in Abilene. While living in Jacksonville, Texas she was a caregiver for the elderly and a homemaker. In 1997, she returned to live in Abilene until her death. Velma was a member of First United Methodist Church in Jacksonville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Stacy Edmond Cosper on December 19, 1966; her second husband, Leland Dee Sutton on May 5, 2004; one son, Eddie Cosper on April 21, 1986; two brothers and two sisters.
Velma is survived by her son, Rodney Cosper and his wife Sharon, of Abilene; daughter-in-law, Linda Cosper, of Kingwood; sister, Junell Palmer, of Arlington; four grandchildren, Brian Cosper and wife Tonya, of Abilene, Staci Clark and husband Daniel, also of Abilene, Lance Cosper and wife Nicole, of Kingwood, Chris Cosper and wife Cary, of Monkton, Maryland and nine great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Joseph Ferguson, Covenant Place Staff, Primary Nurse Care Staff, Coronado Nursing Home and Hendrick Hospice Care for their care of Velma.
