Valeta Goins Wendel, age 93, passed away on October 7, 2016 in Abilene, Texas. Grave side services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at Cherry Spring, Texas in the Dietrich-Rode Cemetery. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas. Valeta was born in Brown County, Texas to George and Elva Goins on July 13, 1923. She attended school in Brown and Mills counties. She married Damon Wendel on November 30, 1944 in Bexar County, Texas. She was a homemaker while her children were growing up and joined the workforce in 1967 in banking. She was a Brownie leader, Sunday school and vacation bible school teacher for many years. Valeta was preceded in death by husband Damon Wendel, parents George and Elva Goins, sister Mildred Reeves, and brother AJ Goins. Valeta is survived by daughters Sandra Yarbrough and husband Don, Karen Gibbs and husband David, and Elva Jo Carr and husband Eddy. Grandchildren Jim Behrens, Tracy Livingston, Tiffany Cox, Rebecca Priess, and Damon Gibbs. Great grandchildren Jake Behrens, Hunter Guerra, Alexandria Guerra, Boehle Behrens, Dekota Guerra, Haley Cox, Sarah Cox, Heather Cox, and Brayden Gibbs and great-great grandchild Emira Guerra. Valeta will be remembered by her family for her love of the color red, Coca Cola, and the exploding canned ham. Memorials may be given to a charity of choice. The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Victor Hudman, Wisteria Place staff, and Hendrick Hospice for the tender care of Valeta.
