Val A. King, of Abilene, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at the age of 96. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:00 pm Monday, May 19 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services, with Chaplain Dave Takacs and Rev. Steven Parker officiating, will be on Tuesday at 1:00 pm at Faith Baptist Church, 2300 South 20th Street. Following the funeral service, Val will be buried next to her husband in the Sun Dial section of Elmwood Memorial Park.
Born in Fordyce, Arkansas, on April 26, 1912, Val was the daughter of the late R.E. and Josie Eville (Pierce) Cheek. The Cheek family moved from Fordyce, Arkansas to Abilene, Texas in 1928. She married Bruce Allen King on May 15, 1932 in Abilene. The couple lived numerous places in Texas and California before returning to Abilene in 1984. Val was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist Church in Abilene.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bruce, on July 14 1997; and four brothers, Sam, Albert, Bill and Herbert Cheek. Val is survived by two daughters, Mina Jo King of Abilene, and Barbara Jane Helms and her husband Bob, of Truth Or Consequence, New Mexico; three sisters, Elsie Carpenter, Fannie Box and Bobye Eagleston, all of Abilene; one grandson, Derrell and his wife Susan; one great-grandson, Cody; one brother-in-law, George King, of Fairview, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Kay Law, of McKinney, Texas, Dorothy Pashman, of Jackson, Mississippi, and Lola King, of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the American Cancer Society, 209 S. Danville, Building B, Suite 107, Abilene, Texas 79605; or to the donor's favorite charity.
