Ulma Grace Hogg

November 22, 1930 — December 25, 2024

Ulma Grace Alexander Hogg, a lifelong educator, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on December 25, 2024.

Grace was born in Burnet County, Texas on November 22, 1930, the third of five children born to Cleborn Lester Alexander and Era Delle Howell Alexander. Times were tough in the 1930's and the family moved to Pleasanton, Texas, where Grace excelled in school. Upon graduating valedictorian from high school, her father gave her $1 for college, and in 1948 she chose to attend Abilene Christian College. She worked her way through college as a custodian, drugstore clerk, and resident assistant in Zellner Hall. Upon graduation from ACC in 1953, she moved to Taylor, Texas and taught fourth grade for four years.

During the summer of 1956, Grace was a counselor at Camp Hunt in New York where she met another Texan, Farrell Hogg. They married in 1957, settled in Crane, Texas, and Grace taught school until their oldest, Theresa, was born. Later in 1959 the family of three moved to Abilene, where Kenneth, Kevin, and Kerek were born.

When Kerek started kindergarten, Grace returned to teaching and spent 19 years at Bowie Elementary, teaching and influencing hundreds of fourth graders. She put her heart and soul into teaching and nearly every school night she worked diligently preparing lessons and grading papers. In addition to her public-school service, Grace also taught bible class and wrote curriculum for Hillcrest Church of Christ where she was an active member for over 50 years.

Upon retiring from teaching in 2005, Grace took on additional roles at her church including filling communion cups, washing church laundry, preparing meals, hosting people in her home, welcoming new members, making bereavement visits, writing encouraging notes, and organizing meals for others. She also served her community by volunteering at Hendrick Hospice, the Reading Rainbows program, and driving the elderly or those without transportation to their doctor's appointments.

Above and beyond her many accomplishments, Grace's greatest joy was her family. Because her children no longer lived in Abilene, she wrote weekly letters to them, sharing her daily activities and news of family and friends. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially at the holidays. She worked for weeks before each holiday, preparing meals and treats so she could spend more time talking and playing games with everyone. Grace never slowed down until she was diagnosed with dementia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Farrell, her parents and her three brothers. She is survived by her sister Laquita Higgs (Elton) of Jackson, Michigan and by her children Theresa Taylor (Norman) of Farmers Branch, Kenneth Hogg (Ginny) of Dallas, Kevin Hogg of Columbia, Maryland, and Kerek Hogg (Carrie) of Arlington. She is also survived by her grandchildren

Marcus Dickey, Micah Taylor, Cory Dickey, Harrison Taylor, Katelyn Taylor, Nathan Hogg, Natalie Hogg Pretzello, Hannah Hogg, Nicholas Hogg, and Benjamin Hogg, and by her great grandchildren Naomi Taylor, Chaz Dickey, Ty Taylor, Isaiah Dickey, Ivy Dickey, Angel Johnson, Jonah Hogg and Ezra Hogg.

Visitation will be at Hamil Family Funeral Home at 10am on Friday, January 3, 2025, followed by her memorial service at 11am. Burial will be at Elmwood Memorial Park immediately following the service.
