Tommy Foy Gunter

1949 — November 25, 2020

Tommy Gunter passed away into the arms of his Lord on November 25, 2020, after battling COVID-19. A memorial service will be held at 5 pm on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Officiating will be Jimmy Griffon of Belmont Baptist. Time for visiting will follow at the funeral home until 7 pm. The family respectfully requests for those to attend to wear face masks. Tommy was born in Brownfield, TX to Lena Mae and Foy Gunter on November 22, 1949. The family moved to Groom, TX where Tommy went to school and played football before a foot injury ended his career. After graduating from Groom High School, Tommy went on to harvest wheat for several years. In 1972, he met Mary Katherine Hefley, the love of his life, and they were wed January of 1973. He farmed for 13 years until he went on to study aviation mechanics. After graduating from A&P school, he kicked off a 30-year career as a plane inspector before retiring in June of 2020. Tommy loved to fish more than anything, and he and his best friend Shawn Baysinger were on the water any chance they got. He was an avid football fan and hunter, and his fondest memories were hunting and shooting two deer with his son, Micha, and two granddaughters, Rachel and Jacee - he had the time of his life. He also enjoyed watching his grandsons play football. He also enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, and NASCAR racing. True to his mechanic nature, he spent his days working on his truck. He made sure no kid ever moved out on their own without knowing how to change a tire and check their own oil. He looked forward to spending time with his grandsons after his retirement. He was a friend, brother, and helping hand to all who crossed his path. He was a gentleman of few words unless the topic was history, which he could talk about for hours. Tommy is missed greatly and survived by his wife of 47 years, Katie Gunter, and his five children: Lianna Yount, Shyla Kloss, Brandi Weathered, Micah Gunter, and Jessie Knowles. He also leaves behind his brother, Larry Gunter, and sisters, Kathy Baggett (Allan) and Jo Mounce (Tom), and three fur babies: Penny, Zipper, and BabyGirl. Preceding him in passing are his parents, daughter Robin Johnson, grandson Chris Hensley, and son-in-law Don “Daddy Don” Kloss. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or the ASPCA.
