Thomas Edmund Maloney III was born in Denton, Texas, to Thomas Jr. & Jonelle Maloney on May 12, 1960. The family lived in Farmers Branch, Texas moving to Abilene later where he graduated from Cooper High School in 1979. Tom or Tommy, as many friends and family called him, married Doris Newton in 1979 and had two daughters before divorcing in 1983. He married Sherry Roberts in 1984 inheriting her daughter and having one daughter of their own. Tom worked for Cater Vend, Red Bull, DeCoty Coffee Company, as well as being and entrepreneur, distributing Famous Amos and Murray cookies, but most recently transporting for the funeral industry, which he felt was his calling. He was the consummate salesman and route driver, who developed deep friendships, not just relationships, with his many varied customers.
He enjoyed amateur radio, participating in community service, such as SkyWarn, West Texas Fair and Rodeo, and City of Abilene’s Steam-N-Wheels bike races, as well as Star Trek and spending time with his grandchildren. Many called him dad or brother with no relation; he was just that type of person.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Edmund Maloney, Jr. and his mother Jonelle Rudisill Maloney and his daughter Crystal Coggin Billings.
Tom is survived by his wife, Sherry Maloney of Abilene, TX; three daughters, Kara Roberts O’Meara and husband Anthony, Elizabeth Coggin McMilien and husband Scott, and Patricia Maloney of Abilene, TX, among other “adopted” daughters he loved; two sisters, Shannon Maloney Juarez of Arlington, TX and Erin Maloney Schroeder of Abilene, TX; five grandchildren: Sabrina McMillien, Teryl O’Meara, Joseph McMillien, Dalton McMillien, and Ayden O’Meara; and numerous nephews and nieces.
The outpouring of love from the many customers, fellow ham radio operators, and friends has been tremendously comforting to the family. Thank you to all.
