Sylvia Ashby

In Loving Memory of Sylvia Dorothy Honor Waldock Ashby Sylvia Ashby was born April 30, 1923 in Abbington Piggotts, near Royston Herts, England to Arthur and Annie Waldock. She passed away in her 95th year on April 5, 2018 in Rockwall, TX. Sylvia grew up in a small village near London, England. She joined the English Army during WWII and met and married J.B. Ashby while he was serving with the US Army in England. J.B. was deployed to Germany and then to the U.S. when the war ended. Sylvia came to America on "The GI Bride" ship, landing in New York and traveling by train to Abilene, TX. Sylvia became a loving wife and homemaker raising three children in Hawley, TX. She & J.B. joined the Christian Science Church and served in many local organizations. They moved to Abilene in 1968 operating the Gulf Service Station at the corner of S 14th and the Winter's Freeway. They spent their senior years summering at Lake Coleman and wintering at South Padre Island. In her later years, she was blessed with wonderful care at Brookdale Summer Ridge Assisted Living in Rockwall and Royse City Nursing/Rehab. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jonathan B. Ashby and her eldest daughter, Dorothy White Pugh. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Riley and husband, Dave of Rockwall, TX and son, David and wife, Sharon of Katy, TX; her grandchildren, Cindy Hodge and husband Brandon; Steven Riley and wife, Heather; Christopher Riley; Kellee King and husband, Charlie; Justin Ashby; John White and wife, Jaimi; as well as six great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her compassion, deep faith in God and unfailing sense of humor. Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, April 7, 2018 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene with funeral services beginning at 2:00 pm in their Chapel.
