Susan Stark Reeves

1939 — February 14, 2009

Susan Stark Reeves passed away February 14, 2009 after battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for the last two years. She was 69. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Susan was born in Provo, Utah August 23, 1939 and lived briefly in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with her parents and brother as a youth. Her teen years were spent in East Texas, graduating from Daingerfield High School in 1958. She moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas at Austin in 1959. Her first son, J Marc Hawkins, was born in 1962 in Austin. Her second child, Christopher S Hawkins was born in 1965 in Dallas. She married Sam Reeves in 1978, moving to Sweetwater, TX with Christopher that same year. Sam brought a new life to the family and was gift to everyone. She and Sam moved to Abilene in 1984 where they lived the rest of their lives. She is preceded in death by her father, Frank G Stark of Longview, TX (1975), her mother Freda R Stark of Abilene, TX (2000), her husband, Sam Reeves (2007), as well as his mother Flossie Reeves (1997). She is survived by sons J Marc Hawkins and Christopher S Hawkins and spouse Cindy R Gunderson all of Austin, TX, brother J Gregor Stark and wife Dollye of Dallas, TX, step daughter Pam Rhodes and husband Rick of Austin and their children (and spouses) Craig Rhodes (Kristi) of Houston, TX and Scott Rhodes (Rebekah) of Austin, TX. Susan will always be remembered as a giver. She was very involved in her community, donating her energy to numerous causes including, among others, the Festival of Trees for Windcrest and the Diamondback Charity Golf Classic in Abilene. In every part of her life she gave her love, her time, her resources, and her ear to others. She cherished her friends and family and thrived on bringing joy to others. She will also be remembered as someone who lived life to the fullest, loved dancing, entertaining and having fun. We rejoice with Susan that her high heels are back on, that she dances with loved ones, the stars and all the angels of heaven. We hear her distinct laugh, see her infectious smile and that twinkle in her eye as the Lord of the Dance lives on singing "Dance, Dance wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance said He. And I'll lead you all wherever you may be and I'll lead you all in the Dance said He". She and her family want to acknowledge the many acts of love and selfless giving shown her by the entire A-5 staff of Hendrick Center for Extended Care, her physicians, her friends and family, and the many others during her last months. You truly made a difference. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hendrick Medical Center Foundation, 1900 Pine Street, Abilene, TX 79601-9950 or ALS Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Office of Development, 5323 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, TX 75390-9009 (or online at utsouthwestern.edu, "giving").
