Sue was born on July 27, 1923 in Floresville, Texas to The Hon. Sam Brown Carr and Mary Ida Wallace Carr. Sue was one of five siblings - Sam, Joe, Margaret, John and Sue.
She proudly graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1945 magna cum laude, with a degree in Home Economics. One of her proudest accomplishments was taking a year off from school so she could pay for her sister, Mary Margaret, to attend The University of Texas. She was a lifelong and exuberant University of Texas Longhorn football fan (Hook'Em, Horns!). Sue met her late husband, John R. Day, Jr. in Electra, Texas in 1946. They were married July 14, 1947 and were faithful companions for over 64 years. Sue taught public school for over 30 years, starting at Hawley ISD, and then moving to Abilene High School, where she instituted the HECE program. Sue was somewhat of a rebel who never gave up the fight. She fought for and helped women get an equal pay scale within the AISD.
Sue, or “Grammer” as her grandchildren called her, will be missed by all. She was an accomplished baker and her sourdough “home bread” was much sought after by her grandchildren. She was a good bridge player who enjoyed how the game kept her mind sharp.
After retirement, Sue and Jack spent many hours cruising the backroads on Jack’s Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. Favorite destinations included Colorado and New Mexico. Sue “persuaded” Jack to participate in square dancing with her by agreeing to ride on his motorcycle.
Sue was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene for over 50 years.
Sue is survived by her son John R. Day III and his wife Peggy of Abilene, daughter Melissa Pulliam and her husband Mark of Plano Texas, four grandchildren including John R. Day IV of Huntsville, Texas, Christina Maher of Anchorage, Alaska, Matthew Pulliam of Dallas, Texas, and Meaghan Pulliam of Plano, Texas, and two great grandchildren, Alice and Henry Maher, of Anchorage, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and two infant children.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Barry Moak, Hendrick Hospice, and the wonderful caregivers at Wisteria Place.
Memorials may be made in her honor to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, TX 79601.
