Sidney Schmidt

Sidney Philip Schmidt went to be with his Lord on October 16, 2024. His body has been donated to the University of Texas Southwest Medical School in Dallas, TX.

A memorial service will be held at Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, TX 79606 on November 14, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. Arrangements are with The Hamil Family Funeral Home.

All memorials to be given to the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention, P. O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230.

Dr. Schmidt was born in Anamoose, North Dakota, on January 10, 1928 to Philip and Anna Schmidt, the youngest of eight children. At age 10 his family moved to Minnesota where he subsequently had the experience of being born again, received his calling from God into Christian ministry, and later was ordained into the Gospel Ministry on June 13, 1952.

He served in the U. S. Army, stationed in Tokyo, Japan between the years 1946-1948. He graduated from Northwestern College in 1952 with a B.A. degree and continued his graduate studies at Western Baptist Seminary in Portland, OR, earning his M. Div. degree in 1955. He earned his M.A. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1957 and in 1976 he earned his Ph.D. degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He married Darleen Wilson on August 16, 1950, in Thermopolis, WY. He is survived by his wife, Darleen, and three children, DiAnn, (daughter) and husband, Chris Whigham, of Midland, TX. [DiAnn's first husband, George A. Koehl III, and father of their children, moved to heaven 2016] their four children are, George IV (Elizabeth) Koehl, Wade (Blaire) Koehl, Candace (Jean-Paul) Bourgeois, and Brittany (Stephen) McGee; Timothy (son) and his wife, Kristi, Abilene, TX, and their three daughters, Victoria (Ben) Shaw; Raegan and Rebekah; and Todd (son), and his wife, Gwen, serving in Central Asia, and their three sons, Troy (Ria) Schmidt, Caleb and Eric. Sidney also has eleven great-grandchildren.

Sidney and Darleen were appointed as missionaries by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention on June 16, 1961; They studied Mandarin Chinese in Singapore between 1961-1963. Sidney was a seminary professor in Penang, Malaysia and the Republic of Singapore between the years 1963-1993. Sid and Darleen served under the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for 32 years. During these years overseas he conducted numerous leadership training seminars in many countries of South and Southeast Asia, including conducting MasterLife Workshops, equipping others to lead this discipleship training.

Sid has written a seminary text on Church Administration. He also authored/edited a six-month course on Marriage Enrichment, Tightening the Knot. Five study guides were also authored by him; In Step with the Master, Basic Bible Truths, Principles of Victorious Christian Living, and Principles of the Spirit-Filled Life.

Since retirement in 1993, Sidney and Darleen lived in Euless, TX for 8 years, they then moved to Mesa Springs Retirement Village, Abilene, TX in 2000. He was a member Wylie Baptist Church of Abilene, TX. It is the request of the family that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention; PO Box 6767, Richmond, VA 23230.
