Shirley Harkrider

Shirley Ruth Bowers Harkrider, of Abilene, TX, passed away on July 11, 2023, in Abilene, at the age of 86 years.

Visitation will be Friday, July 14 from 5 – 7 pm at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, located at 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Wylie Baptist Church, 6097 Buffalo Gap Rd, Abilene, TX, 79606 under the direction of Pastors Mike Harkrider, Brett Stewart and Keith Clifton, with the graveside service following at Potosi Cemetery.

Shirley was born in Fort Worth, TX to James and Margaret Bowers on March 23, 1937. She graduated from Polytechnic High School, in Fort Worth. She was married to Jerry Harkrider on May 6, 1955, in Fort Worth. She dedicated her life as a caring, compassionate homemaker in being a Christian example for everyone with whom she came in contact.

Shirley was undoubtedly the most loving and genuine person you could ever meet. She was an incredible woman with a heart for God, her family, and all those around her. She was musical, artistic, hardworking, athletic, loving, encouraging, kind-hearted, and so much more.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Bowers, Jr, and grandson Jeremy Harkrider.

Shirley is survived by her husband of 68 years, Jerry Harkrider; sons Tim and wife Shelley Harkrider, Mike and wife Pat Harkrider, daughter Sherry and husband Jeff Stewart, all of Abilene, TX. Grandchildren Lindsey and husband Anthony Deringer, Blake and wife Julie Stewart, McKenna Harkrider, Katie and husband Andy Chisholm, Tim Harkrider, Brett and wife Andrea Stewart, Dakota and wife Nikki Harkrider; and Alexandria Harkrider. Also 11 great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers will be Anthony Deringer, Tim Harkrider, Shane Harkrider, Matthew Harkrider, Charles Carruthers Jr, Eddie Bowers, Ron Teal and Hank Dews.
