Scott McGlasson Smith

1930 — August 8, 2014

Scott McGlasson Smith passed away Friday, August 8, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center. He was 83. Born December 13, 1930 in El Dorado, Kansas, his parents were Bert Smith and Dorothea McGlasson Smith. He married Mona L. Coston in 1951 in Fort Worth, TX. Scott and his family moved to Abilene, where he attended South Junior High (later named Jefferson Jr. High), then played in the Eagle Band under Prof. Bynum, who said “Scott would do anything for the band except play!” and graduated from Abilene High School in 1948. He attended Hardin-Simmons University and played in The Cowboy Band, forming beloved memories of wearing out his boots doing the “Boot Scoot” march. He later earned an associate degree from Cisco College. He enjoyed 38 years employed at West Texas Utilities where he worked in the Transmission Dept. in “protective relaying.” He loved WTU and his coworkers, and after retirement was active in the “Golden Years” retirement group. He also was an enthusiastic supporter of Abilene. He actively participated in all three Abilene Christian (Disciples of Christ) Churches, helping with building repairs, replacing light bulbs and other things to help daily operations at each of the churches; was an Elder at Brook Hollow and Wylie Christian Churches, and represented those churches with the Abilene Congregation of Churches, serving several terms as treasurer. He volunteered with ASCET, RSVP, AAUW book sales and Abilene Weatherization Organization, and read with students at Lee Elementary School. He also worked on a study for the City of Abilene regarding the need for and feasibility of city-wide electronic connectivity. Later, he spent time playing bridge at Brook Hollow Christian Church and Rose Park Senior Center, as well as watching TV and playing bridge at Royal Estates, where he and Mona were currently living. Scott is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mona Smith; daughter Kathy Strickland and husband John of Plano, TX; sons David Scott Smith and wife, Millie of Blackwell, TX, and Crockett Smith and wife, Debbie of Richardson, TX; grandchildren Cory Strickland, Jeff Henderson, Heather Cooke, Brandon Boyd and wife Michelle, Jennifer Solis and husband Angel, and Mindy Corley and husband Chuck. Great-grandchildren are as follows: Alexandra Thornton, Brian Garza, Kylie & Tristan Boyd, Shianne, Dillon, Madison, & Stockton Solis, and Alexis, Bailey & Gavin Corley. Scott is also survived by two brothers, Gary Smith and wife Peggy of Richardson, TX, and John Smith of Hurst, TX; and one sister, Sally Westcott of Atwater, California. A memorial celebration will be held Wednesday, August 13, at 3:00 PM, at First Christian Church with Dr. Don Wilson, Pastor Doug Roysden, Dr. Charles Fisher and Rev. Penny Biddy officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family wishes to thank Dr. Toby Williams for his care of Scott over the years. Memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church, 1420 N. 3rd Street, Abilene, TX 79601, or to the organization of choice.
