Schooler Samukawa

1939 — April 26, 2017

Schooler-Samukawa, 78, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on April 26, 2017 in Abilene, Texas Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on May 12, 2017 at her home on Lake Sweetwater. All are welcome to come and memorialize her with your precious memories and stories and to stay to scatter her ashes in the lake so they may commingle with her beloved Wayman Schooler-Samukawa was born in Hugo, Oklahoma to Roy Ernest Schooler and May Lou Croft Schooler. She grew up and went to school in Oklahoma. After moving to San Francisco, Ca to live with an aunt, she met and married her first husband. They lived with their two daughters in various states before settling again in Northern California. Marriage to her second husband took her to Japan where she lived and taught english. She fell in love with the Japanese culture and kept close ties to her husband's family even after divorce. She met her late husband, Wayman, in Dallas and knew she'd met the love of her life. Schooler-Samukawa was an enigmatic, unique person and anyone that knew her enjoyed her company and her vivacious personality. It was difficult for such a free and artistic spirit to settle in West Texas, but not nearly as difficult as it was for the West Texas folk whom had never encountered such a person. They survived and grew to love her. She found many kindred spirits here and has a large family of friends whom she absolutely cherished. Having worked in such interesting careers as stained glass artist, ordained minister, tax preparation, retail associate and even a powder monkey, she was always happiest while in her creative mode. Accomplished seamstress, poet, author, painter, and stained glass artist, her works have been appreciated by many. Never an actress herself, she loved the local community theatres here in Abilene and was a great patron of them and the actors. She loved all of them and will be greatly missed by her extensive "heart" family. Schooler-Samukawa was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayman Leverton and her brother, William Schooler. Schooler-Samukawa is survived by her daughters, Eden Walton of Oak Harbor, Wa., and April Ewing of Abilene, Tx. , five grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
