Samuel Frank Hughes

1951 — January 31, 2021

On Sunday, January 31st, Samuel F Hughes passed away in Abilene, Texas. Anyone who knew Sam, knew him for his jovial storytelling, frequent jokes, occasional pranks, huge smile and warm greetings. Sam loved music and dancing, fried onion rings, boating at Hords Creek Lake, stiffly starched Wranglers, vintage cars, jelly filled donuts, time on the John Deere, playing cards, and giving people nicknames. He hated butter beans, airplanes and the Yankees.

A true Texan ‘til the day he died, Sam was born in Stamford, TX and was the son of Samuel “Doc” Lafayette and Elna Love Hughes. He spent his younger years helping his father farm the family land and playing baseball. He graduated from Cooper High School in 1969 and married Cassie Stephenson in 1976. Together they opened Quality Marble Company and enjoyed the many ‘salt of the earth’ friends they made through the business and industry. Sam retired in 2001 to enjoy spending more time with his family and friends, long motorcycle trips, and quality time with his dogs.

Sam is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Ann Young. He is survived by his children, Scott of Fort Worth, Texas and Chelsey of New York, New York and their mother Cassie. He is also survived by his brother John Hughes of Bedford, Texas and his sister Linda Fulgham of Abilene, Texas, along with many nieces and nephews.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances or donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Abilene at 717 North 10th Street, Abilene, Texas or Hendrick Hospice Care at 1651 Pine Street, Abilene, Texas.
