Sam Powell

Sam "PaPa" Powell, 64 of Abilene, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2018. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, on Friday, May 4, 2018 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Pastor Mark Hewitt and Pastor Mike Harkrider will officiate. A private burial will follow the service. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 3rd at the funeral home. Sam was born September 9, 1953 in Midland, Texas to Henry James Powell and Billie Elois (Miller). He married Fodie Sonnenburg in Hamlin, Texas on June 4, 1976. Sam moved to Abilene in 1976 and was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church and later Wylie Baptist Church. He loved camping, gardening and visiting with any and everybody. He never met a stranger. Sam loved spending time with his grandchildren. He loved cooking and enjoyed camping and traveling in his R.V. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Billie Powell as well as his nephew, Bryan Powell. Sam is survived by his wife, Fodie Powell; his daughter, Ashley; his son, Matthew Powell and wife Bonnie, all of Abilene; one brother, Mike Powell and wife Rhonda of Stamford; niece, Layla Powers and husband Chris of Flower Mound; eight grandchildren, Chloe, Trayden, Skylar, London, Navii, Ansleigh, Madi, and Autumn "Boo". He is also survived by his father-in-law, Ray Sonnenburg; his mother-in-law, Jackie Sonnenburg and brother-in-law, Ray Sonnenburg, Jr.
