Ruth Geraldine Skaggs, “Jerri” by her friends, and “Nanaw” by her family. Mom was born in Matador, Texas in the year 1927 and went home to her lord and savior August 7, 2021. Mom moved from Lake Palo Pinto to Abilene eight years ago, and was living at Windcrest Heath and Rehab when she passed.
Mom was cremated and her ashes rest with our dad (McElton Skaggs) at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, with The Hamil Family Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 11 am on September 4, at Lone Camp Baptist Church, 108 Hoover Road, Palo Pinto, TX 76484.
Born Ruth Geraldine Brooks to C.F. Brooks and Edith (Sampson) Brooks, she became one of 10 children: Ed and Ruby (Brooks) Whitaker, Milton and Modeam (Warren) Brooks, Preacher and LaRue (Warren) Brooks, Jesse and Delores (Brooks) Smallwood, John Louis and Vivian (Brooks) Woods, James and Genelle (Brooks) Carpenter, James and Earle (Brooks) Price, John and Mary Ann (Brooks) Avara, Jerry and Patricia (Brooks) Edwards. Mary Ann is the only living sister at 87 years old, and lives in Denver City.
Our mother was involved in real estate and while managing apartments, became the President of the Abilene Apartment Association – but we just thought of her as mom.
Mom and dad had three children – Sherilyn Skaggs of Abilene and her children, Brooks, Jeff, and Kristen; Brett Skaggs and wife Lydia of Port Aransas and their children, Brennan, Nathan, and Haley; and Connie Mac Skaggs and wife Jeri of Abilene and their children, Jason and Summer; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Lone Camp Baptist Church at 108 Hoover Road, Palo Pinto, TX 76484.
Mom loved all of us very much, as we did her. We will miss all our conversations with her, but we will see her soon!!
