Ruth Elizabeth Giles, 91, passed away on April 23, 2016 in Abilene, Texas, her home for the past 60 years.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 26, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 27 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Reverend Bill Libby officiating. Burial will follow at Elliott Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery. Arrangements are by Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Ruth was born in El Paso, Texas to Robert Wiley Mann and Verna Aurora Walcott
Mann on November 22, 1924. She graduated valedictorian from El Paso Austin High School and attended the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy, now UTEP. She married Vade William Giles on December 9, 1944 in Laredo, Texas. She worked twenty years for the Abilene Independent School District as an administrative assistant. She was involved in a number of civic organizations and clubs including Opti-Mrs. Club, Abilene Woman’s Club, and a Sewing Club. She was secretary of GMC Truck Dealers of Texas as well as treasurer of the United Methodist Women at St. Paul’s where she was a member for 60 years. Ruth loved traveling and attended 31 elderhostels in the United States and abroad.
Ruth is survived by her husband of 71 years, Vade Giles; a son, Gary Giles and his wife, Vicki; a son, Jeff Giles and his wife Debbie; three grandchildren-Hillary Stoker and husband Joe; Whitney Martin and husband Bobby; Chase Giles and wife Rachel; and three great-grandchildren, Joe Paul Stoker, Sophie Stoker, and Easton Martin.
Memorials may be given to McMurry University and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
