Ruth Elizabeth Cutting

Ruth E. Cutting, of Abilene, died Thursday, January 17, 2008. Graveside services will be at 3:00 pm Saturday at Elmwood Memorial Park, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Rev. Derrell Patterson officiating. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Ruth was born March 4, 1911 in Transfer, Pennsylvania to William and Caroline (Bell) Bailey. After graduating from Brookfield High School, Ruth attended Youngstown City Hospital Nursing School in Youngstown, Ohio where she received a Graduate Diploma Degree (R.N.). After receiving her degree, Ruth married Glenn Cutting on May 31, 1935 at the Wheeler Memorial Methodist Church in Brookfield, Ohio. In 1946, she moved to Abilene from McDonald, Ohio. She was a nurse for Dr. Sellers, Dr. Adamson and Dr. Smith. Ruth was the night supervisor for Hendrick Medical Center. She also worked as the school nurse at McMurry College. Ruth was equally talented using her nursing skills and serving as Sunday school teacher. She was known to work the night shift at the hospital, then hurry home to change clothes to be prepared to teach her class on Sunday morning. She served as the first President of United Methodist Women (formerly known as Womans Society of Christian Service). One of the first circles was named in her honor and she was selected as the first recipient for a Special Membership Pin. She was a member of Ester Bible Study and The Ruth Chapter at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Ruth, and her family, were charter members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Glenn D. Cutting, in 1990, one daughter, Elinore South, three brothers, Bob, Boyd and Don Bailey, and two sisters, May Acker and Doris Bailey. Ruth is survived by one daughter, Janice Dunlap Stevens, of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Nelle Alderfer, of McDonald, Ohio; six grandchildren, Tony South and wife Kim, Derrell South and wife Roxanne, Donna Hall and husband Gary, Matt Dunlap, Chris Dunlap, and Josh Stevens and wife Amanda; five great-grandchildren, Patricia South, Meridith South, Trent South, Sydney South, and Melanie South. She is also survived by her very dear friends, who took excellent care of her, Aliceann Phillips and Sue Collins. Memorials may be made in honor of Ruth to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1741 Sayles Blvd., Abilene, Texas 79605; Journey United Methodist Church in care of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1741 Sayles Blvd., Abilene, Texas 79605; or to the donor's favorite charity.
