Tyke Slaughter, 86, of Abilene, formerly of El Paso, passed away Friday, December 16, 2016. Funeral service will be held Monday, December 19, at 11:30 a.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, with Pastor Terry Enns officiating. Burial will follow at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
Tyke was born in 1930 in El Paso, Texas. He married Darlene Miller in 1953 and served as a Lieutenant in the US Army in Germany during the Korean War. During his time there, he coached the 12 AAA Group football team to the US Army Europe Championship.
He was a third-generation electrical engineer and worked with his dad Lee Slaughter at Slaughter Electric Company, and then he shifted to motion picture photographer for the majority of the El Paso High School plus UTEP and New Mexico State football games through the Slaughter Film Service. He also developed news film for all three local television stations until the advent of digital cameras.
Tyke and Darlene resided in El Paso until 2002 when they moved to Abilene. In both locations, he was an active member of Gideon's International. He was president of both the El Paso and Abilene Camps, was active with Texas Gideon Card, and was Membership Chairman of the Texas West Region.
He was predeceased by his father Lee D. Slaughter and mother Rosebud Chitwood Slaughter, and his brother Lee Donald Slaughter Jr. He is survived by Darlene, his wife of 63 years, son Wayne and wife Margaret, son Lee and wife Joan, daughter Marci and Gary Wilson, eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
