Roy E. Herring, Jr., 88, died Tuesday, August 2, 2011 in Temple, Texas at Scott & White Hospital. The son of Rose (Ruark) and Roy E. Herring, he was born on April 2, 1923 in Abilene, Texas. Roy was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a self-employed rancher. Mr. Herring was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church. He was a Shriner, a member of Texas Cattleman's Association, and a lifetime member of the NRA. Roy married Voncille "Kitty" Landers on December 12, 1941. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty Herring, on April 14, 2005, and his parents. Roy is survived by his son, Don Herring and his wife Kay of Fort Worth; sister, Geraldine McWilliams of Temple; three grandchildren, Melinda Roberson and husband Randy of Abilene, Tim Herring of San Rafael, California, and Dee Dee Herring of Fort Worth; two great-grandchildren, Rayce Roberson and Mandy Roberson; and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 5, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene, with Rev. Jack Ridlehoover officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.
