Ronald Barrett Carroll, 80, of Abilene, Texas, passed away in his home on August 27, 2013 after a short battle with lung cancer.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 29, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 30, at Elmwood West United Methodist Church with Pastor Ryan Strebeck officiating. Burial will follow at 4:00 p.m., August 30, in Greenwood Community Cemetery in Greenwood, Texas near Weatherford, Texas, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home.
Ron was born to M.B. and Bernice Carroll on July 10, 1933 in Weatherford, Texas in Parker County. He went to school at Greenwood and graduated from Brock High School in 1952.
Ron married his high school sweetheart, Claudette Dees, on August 23, 1952 in the Greenwood Methodist Church.
He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company where he became a store manager and retired after 31and one-half years. His job with Goodyear was what brought him and his family to Abilene.
Ron was very active in numerous organizations around Abilene. He was a Past Master of John Sayles Lodge 1408 and a member of various Masonic bodies, including Suez Shrine Temple, for 58 years. He was a Past Patron of Abilene Chapter #30 Order of the Eastern Star. He was active with Abilene #86 International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, serving as a board member for many years.
Ron volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels, being involved with the Kiwanis Club, and enjoying working at the West Texas Fair & Rodeo and Western Heritage Classic.
Ron loved spending his free time golfing or playing dominoes and cards with friends and family. Ron especially enjoyed getting visits from his great-grandchildren.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Myrna Gail Chenault; and three half-brothers Aubrey, Marion and Truman Carroll.
Ron is survived by his wife of 61 years, Claudette Carroll; his children Ron and Sherry Carroll, Mailyn and Jimmy Queen, and Ricky and friend Carolyn Gray; brother James and Lavene Carroll; and sisters Danice Mainard, Margie and Robert Elliott and Barbara and Kenneth Smethers. Survivors also include seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
