Roger Don Lucas

1948 — April 30, 2009

Roger Don Lucas, 60, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at an Abilene medical center. Don was reared by his parents, Alice Mae (Rodgers) and Roiel Lee Lucas, in Electra, Texas, where he was born on October 6, 1948, and graduated from Electra High School. After serving in the U.S. Army, he married Sherry Jean Owen on September 4, 1971 in Electra. He worked for Texaco/Shell Oil Company in Wichita Falls, Electra, and later Tye, Texas, for a total of 35 years. He coached Little League Baseball until his son started high school. In the church in Electra, Texas, he worked with the kids and in the music program. He loved to sing with his family gathered around the piano. Don will be greatly missed as he always seemed to entertain everyone. We loved him and will miss him very much. As expressed in Don's favorite song, "What a day that will be when My Jesus I shall see. When I look upon his face, the one who saved me by his grace. When he takes me by the hand, and leads me to the promised land, what a day, glorious day that will be." Don was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Alice Lucas, and a sister, Paulette Hughes and brother-in-law, Donald. His biological mother, Elizabeth Baughtman, preceded him in death at an early age. Don is survived by his wife, Sherry Lucas of Abilene; son Christopher Lucas and wife, Suzanne, of Abilene; daughter, Camie Johnson and husband, Jeremy, of Abilene; and five grandchildren, Brittany, Dylan, Hayden, Ricky and Hannah. Survivors also include a brother, Randall Lucas and wife, Joan, of Wichita Falls; sisters, Elizabeth Scarberry and husband, Cloyce, of Snyder, and Jackie Harris and husband, Travis, of Edmond, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 4th, at New Hope Church in Abilene officiated by Rev. Charles J. Farina, Pastor Chuck Farina, and Rev. Darwin Stroud. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Mike Wallis, Scott Warren, Mark Hines, Robert Soukup, Rusty Hunter and Kenneth Edge. The family expresses a special "Thank You" to Dr. Joe Dixon and his staff, Dr. Christopher Trauth, and the "Angles in Uniform" of Hendrick Hospice Care.
