Robert Reed Strevel passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, at the age of 78.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 19, 2016 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 20, in Brad Cemetery in Palo Pinto County, Texas.
It is with grateful hearts that we celebrate the life of Robert. He was born on May 7, 1938 in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the oldest child of Reed Charles and Margaret Breen Strevel. He lived in Pontiac, Michigan until he completed his GED and joined the Army at age 17.
In 1959 Robert met Sherry Pat Snoody and they were married in Palo Pinto County, Texas on February 25, 1961. They were blessed with two children, Steven Wayne Strevel and Teresa Lynne Strevel Dunlap.
Robert was preceded in death by his father Reed Charles Strevel, his mother Margaret Mary Breen Strevel Looney, stepfather Carson Looney, sister Patricia Tayler, brother Ronald Allen Strevel and his wife Sherry Pat Strevel.
Robert leaves his son Steven, daughter Teresa, and son-in-law Jeff; sister Betty and her husband Greg Smith; six grandchildren - Shawn Steven Strevel, Shauna Star Strevel McArthur, Amber K'Lee Ann Cook Hales, Shaylea Dianne Cook Pennington, Alexander Reed Strevel, and Thatcher Reed Dunlap; six great grandchildren - Zachery Landon Andrews, Shambrey Faith Stanfield, Summer K'Lee Ann Cook Hales, Addison Annette Cook Warren, Chevy Michael Hales and Caselyn Ruby McArthur.
Robert's Military career spanned 20 years of service and included three tours in Vietnam and one in South Korea. He retired as a Master Sgt., and then furthered his education by attending Cisco Jr. College for two years. Upon completion of his academic studies, he worked for the City of Abilene as a Water Treatment Supervisor for 15 years. Robert enjoyed watching NASCAR, playing slot machines, and traveling. He is remembered for his generosity of love, his sense of humor, and his ability to make people laugh.
