Bob Davis, 73, of Abilene, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Monday, April 28, 2014 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday at the funeral home.
Bob was born July 23, 1940 in Clyde, Texas to Walter and Ora (Roberts) Davis. He moved with his family to Abilene at an early age. Bob graduated from Abilene High School in 1958 and entered McMurry University. He left college after two years to fulfill his military active duty in Fort Ord, California. After completing his military duty, he returned to Abilene and worked awhile before returning to college and graduating from Hardin-Simmons University in 1965 with a BBA degree. He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army and the Texas National Guard.
Following graduation, he took a position with the Crum & Forster Insurance Group to become an All Lines Claims Representative. He remained in this position for 15 years until his desire to be outdoors led him to becoming self-employed in Independent Catastrophe Claims. Bob followed this career all over the United States from coast to coast until retirement. The time between major catastrophes gave him time to pursue his favorite pastimes of quail hunting and bass fishing.
After his retirement, he spent most of his spare time with his grandsons. They enjoyed fishing, watching football and traveling. He enjoyed watching them play football and baseball and strived to be at every event that he could, only missing when his health prevented from being there.
He was a good dad, granddad, brother, uncle and friend and will be missed by those that loved him.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Karla Hamil and her husband Robert, of Abilene; his two grandsons of whom he was so proud of, Aaron Elliott Hamil and John Austin Hamil, of Abilene; his sister, Betsy Parrish and her husband Chester who was like his big brother and was his cherished friend for over 60 years; his niece, Cindy Davis and her husband Lee, of Granbury; and his nephew, Scott Parrish and his wife Daisy, of Possum Kingdom.
Bob’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Tony Melnyk and Dr. David Randell for their kindness and their excellent care that they showed him during the last year of his life.
Memorials may be made in Bob’s honor to Rescue the Animals, 4620 North 1st, Abilene, TX 79603 or Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, 2222 Welborn St., Dallas, TX 75219.
