Robert S. "Bob" Burton
With aching hearts we tell our loving friends and relatives that our Papa-Daddy-Bobby-Bob reluctantly left his earthly family on Saturday evening, May 23, 2009, in Dallas.
Robert Stanley (Bob) Burton was born December 27, 1942, in Richmond VA. Growing up on Oregon Hill in Richmond, Bob spent his youth playing baseball, walking the railroad tracks, swimming in the James River and 'scrapping' with his friends and brothers. In 1970 Bob moved to Abilene, Texas, where he met and married Darlene Braddock. They spent 23 years in Abilene, moving to Amarillo in 1995, to Lubbock in 1997, and to Dallas in 2008.
Bob was in sales throughout his life working for Murray's Steaks, Meads Bread, Coca-Cola, Moore Business Forms, MBF, and GTech Corporation (TX Lottery). Bob retired from GTech as District Sales Manager in Lubbock in 2008.
Through the years Bob's love of sports pervaded his free time. He coached, played, and officiated baseball, softball, basketball, and football. As a Royal Ambassador leader at Calvary Baptist Church, Bob coached basketball and track teams, touching many young lives. Golf was his favorite hobby and he played Maxwell, Clyde, or Shadow Hills every chance he got.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Claude Vincent and Mae Katherine Burton, and sister Claudia Minor. He is survived by Darlene, his wife of 37 years; daughter Karen Austin and husband Albert of Richmond, VA; son John and wife Lainie of Navarre, FL; daughter Mellany Barnett and husband Larry of Dallas; son Brian and wife Nita of Georgetown, SC; brother Claude and wife Betty of Abilene; brother Jim and wife Vergie of Richmond; uncle "Pete," Ray Slaughter of Mechanicsville, VA, 11 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 30, at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Abilene. Local arrangements are being made by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family will receive friends at a visitation from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church prior to the service.
