Richard L. Campbell

Richard Loyd Campbell, 82 of Abilene, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025 in Abilene, Texas.

Visitation will be 10:00am to 12:00pm on Monday February 10, 2025 at Oldham Lane Church of Christ 5049 Oldham Lane, Abilene, Texas 79602.

Funeral Service will be 2:00pm at Oldham Lane Church of Christ with Eddie Dunn and Clay Peterson, co-officiating.

Burial with Texas DPS honors will follow at Albany Cemetery in Albany, Texas. Arrangements are with The Hamil Family Funeral Home 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd, Abilene, Texas 79606.

Richard was born in Abilene, Texas to Loyd and Floyce (McHaney) Campbell on March 17, 1942. He graduated from Lubbock High School and attended Texas Tech University.

Richard married Linda Carol Leggett on May15, 1965 in Albany, Texas and they shared 59 ½ wonderful years together.

He graduated with honors from the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Graduate Program.

He worked for the Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol for 38 years from 1963 - 2002.

Richard was a Highway Patrol Trooper in Lamesa, La Marque and Brownwood, Texas. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1977 and stationed in Brenham and Sweetwater, Texas. In October of 1984; he was promoted to Lieutenant and was stationed in Lubbock and then Abilene, Texas.

He retired in August of 2002 as the District 4B Highway Patrol Lieutenant in the Abilene, Texas office. Richard was awarded the certification of Master Peace Officer in 2005.

While living in Sweetwater, he was an active member of the Optimist Club. He also served as a volunteer at the Christian Service Center of Abilene, Inc. Abilene, Texas

Survivors include his wife, Linda Campbell, of Abilene, Tx.; a son, Todd Campbell of Greenville, Tx.

Pallbearers will be Wes Balliew, Keith Balliew, Doug Leggett, Glenn Leggett, Chad Mitchell and Javier Perez.

Honorary Pallbearers will be DPS Lt. Stan Waters, Bob Skelton, retired DPS Trooper.

The family wishes to thank Scott and Mindy Holster, their special neighbors that always loved and cared for Richard.
