Peggy Carter Cooke of Abilene passed away peacefully on September 29, 2012 at Covenant Place in Abilene.
The family will greet friends Tuesday evening, October 2nd from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 3rd at the First Baptist Church Chapel in Abilene. David Leyerle will officiate. A private family burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by The Hamil Family Funeral Home in Abilene.
Peggy Carter was born May 28, 1934 in Humboldt, Tennessee to Frank Moses and Nannie Frances Carter. She went to school in Humboldt, Tennessee and later attended Business College. She married William Robert Cooke on December 26, 1954 at the First Baptist Church in Humboldt, Tennessee. Peg was a successful realtor for more than 30 years working for Frances McClure Realty.
She was active with Habitat for Humanity, City Lights, the Abilene Woman's Club, First Baptist Church, First Baptist Family Life Center, and the Abilene Board of Realtors. She was honored as Realtor of the Year and also served as president for the Abilene Board of Realtors.
Peggy is preceded in death by Bill, her husband of 37 years, her parents, three brothers John Lewis Carter and Booster Carter both of St. Louis, MO, Travis Carter of Atwood, TN, four sisters Sue Smith of Milan, TN, Mary Darty and Ann Barton both of Jackson, TN, and Virginia Coppedge of Caruthersville, MO.
Peggy is survived by her four children. Two sons: Jay Cooke and wife Laurie of Richardson and Jim Cooke of Midland. Two daughters: Jana Eckert and husband Larry of Abilene, and Suzanne Woodall and husband Blake of Abilene. Two sisters: Jean Goad and husband Joe of Jackson, Tennessee and Shirley Welch and husband James of Humboldt, Tennessee. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren, Chandler Walters and husband Marcus, Christin Porter and husband Luke, Amanda McSherry and husband Luke, Rebekah Cooke, Emily Woodall, Chase Cooke, Will Cooke, and Evan and Nicholas Eckert. Great grandchildren are Jay Walters and Blakely Porter, with three more on the way. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Pallbearers will be Larry Eckert, Blake Woodall, Luke McSherry, Will Cooke, Sterling Riddle, and Evan and Nicholas Eckert.
Honorary pallbearers are Chase Cooke, Marcus Walters, and Luke Porter.
Peg loved the holidays, cooking for her family, and was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren. She was dedicated throughout her life to helping those who were less fortunate. The only thing that surpassed her servant's heart was her sense of humor.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, Habitat for Humanity, City Lights, or the charity of choice.
