Patricia Garren

Patricia "Pat" McDaniel Garren, 85, of Lubbock and formerly Abilene, passed away on June 17, 2024. Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 29th at 11:00 am at the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest All Saints' chapel, 602 Meander Street in Abilene with the Rev. Amanda Watson officiating. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd.

Pat was born February 17, 1939, in Abilene to Herman F. and Thelma G. McDaniel. She went to Abilene High School and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1960. She was active in high school rodeo and on the TCU Rodeo Team all four years she spent in Fort Worth. She was a member of the American Junior Rodeo Association and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, serving as NIRA Rodeo Queen in 1958. During this time, she secured two All-Around Cowgirl national titles and two National Barrel Racing Championships. She was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. As a young woman, she was also an avid trap and skeet competitor, quail hunter and rancher. She was an artist for many years with a studio in Buffalo Gap, Texas, and a real estate agent with Senter Realtors in Abilene. She was a long-time member of Heavenly Rest and led the Thursday morning Bible Study for several years. She was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, and in 1978 became the first woman to serve as a lay reader at Heavenly Rest. She loved all animals, but horses and her numerous dogs gave her great joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her youngest daughter, Celia Ann Garren, and her love and companion of three decades, Dorothy Thompson.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Katy Garren Hoskins (Curt), grandchildren Alexis Garren, Justin Garren (Danella) and Anita Gilson (Drew), and great-grandchildren Maddox Garren and Kaedyn Garren.

Pallbearers are Jerry Thompson and David Thompson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Rescue the Animals, 5933 South 1st St, Abilene, TX 79605, the Heavenly Rest Music Fund, or your favorite charity. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks the Chaplain Elizabeth Abraham and Hospice of Lubbock, the incredible Hospice of Lubbock nurses, Rev. Jennifer Holder, and to Tyanya Smith, Angie Galvan and the Staff of Fountain Hills Assisted Living and Memory Care in Lubbock, Texas. She was surrounded by outstanding people caring for her in the final days.
