Oneta A. Gwin, 96, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2007 in Abilene. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Tuesday at Broadview Baptist Church, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. David Cason and Rev. Oscar Fanning will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oplin Cemetery.
January 17, 1911, Oneta was born in Oplin, Texas to William "Fate" Atwood and Anna (Fore) Atwood. She married Ernest Gwin in Potosi, Texas on February 20, 1927. Oneta lived in Oplin before moving to Abilene in November of 1952. She began her career as a seamstress in 1953 at T.S. Lankford & Sons, where she worked until 1966. From 1967, until retiring in 1985, Oneta worked as a seamstress for Dorcia Originals. She taught Sunday school for 35 years. Oneta was a member of Broadview Baptist Church.
Oneta was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, in 1973, her sister, Florence Smith, and two son-in-laws, John Sublett and Delmon Smith. She is survived by three daughters, Claudean Sublett of Abilene, Joreta Smith of Lawn, Sylva Dennis and her husband Leo of Abilene; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
