O.B. Stephens, Jr., 88, a lifelong resident of Abilene, passed away on May 18, 2016 in Abilene at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21 at the Heavenly Rest Episcopal Church, 602 Meander St. with the Reverend Luke Back, officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5726 Hwy 277 S. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.
O.B. was born in Hamlin, TX to O.B. Stephens and Verlie Birdwell Stephens on March 29, 1928. He graduated from Abilene High School and Abilene Christian University. He married Joy Munden on September 13, 1948 in Abilene. O.B. attended Abilene High School where he participated in football, basketball and track. He attended Texas A & M and the University of Texas before graduating from Abilene Christian College. In the 1950's and 1960's, he was in the auto business. He was a Buick Dealer in Weatherford and Wichita Falls; Edsel, British Motors, Subaru, and Chrysler Plymouth in Abilene; and, Rolls Royce in Dallas. He was a successful real estate developer and investor. He developed many subdivisions in S. Abilene including Royal Crest, Ridgemont Heights, Ridgmar, Catclaw Place, Garden Grove, Willow Ridge, Wyndrock, Rainey Creek Acres and commercial properties including Leggett Plaza and Ridgemont Village in Abilene. He also had real estate investments in Albuquerque, NM including the Promenade Shopping Center and Spain Professional Plaza. He was President of the Abilene Jaycees. He was an avid downhill and cross country skier and enjoyed boating, golf, tennis and traveling the world. He will be mostly remembered for his sense of humor, optimism, zest for life and love of family.
O.B was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, John B. Stephens.
O.B. is survived by his wife, Joy; 3 children, Brad Stephens and wife Melinda, Gary Stephens and wife Jenna, and Jan Stephens Wilson and husband Alan; 12 grandchildren, Brian Stephens and wife Amy, Jennifer Brandt and husband Travis, Stephanie Phelps and husband Eric, Jeffrey Stephens and wife Tara, Lauren Wheeler and husband Austin, Ashley Nunn and husband Tyler, Michael Stephens and wife Sally, Alexandra Jones and husband Max, Sam Wilson, Max Stephens, Jack Stephens, and Ford Stephens; 12 great-grandchildren, Baylor Brandt, Emma Brandt, Abbey Brandt, Maggie Stephens, Ben Stephens, Harrison Phelps, Haylee Phelps, Lillian Wheeler, Cody Nunn, August Nunn, Jake Stephens, and Ellington Stephens)
Pallbearers will be his 7 grandsons, Brian Stephens, Jeffrey Stephens, Michael Stephens, Sam Wilson, Max Stephens, Ford Stephens, and Jack Stephens.
