Myra Craig, 87, a resident of Abilene, Texas and former resident of both Robert Lee and Sterling City, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 30, 2010, in Abilene.
The daughter of the late Vera (Gaskins) Harris and Dixie Harris, Myra was born on November 8, 1922 in Big Spring, Texas. After graduation from Forsan High School, she attended Abilene Christian College from 1940 until her marriage to her high school sweetheart, James H. Craig, on November 21, 1941 in Forsan, Texas. Her education was interrupted when she followed her husband to New York City. While waiting for his return from deployment during World War II, Myra worked in the post office following in the footsteps of her mother who was the postmaster in Forsan.
The couple returned to West Texas where they reared their son, Jim, and daughter, Jamie. In 1970, Myra received her Master of Education degree. She was a beloved elementary school teacher from 1970 until 1995, having taught in Robert Lee ISD and later Sterling City before her retirement.
In 1995, Myra moved from Sterling City to Abilene where she was a resident of Christian Village and a member of University Church of Christ.
Myra was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Craig, on December 31, 1993, and her parents.
Myra is survived by her son, Jim Craig and wife Karen of Abilene, and her daughter, Jamie Henshaw and husband Jim of Cambridgeshire, England. She is also survived by four beloved grandchildren - Anslee Swarb and husband Josh are of Monahans, Texas. Anslee graduated from ACU, and she and Josh are the parents of "Mimi's" precious great-grandchildren, Nathan and Karlee. Lt. Jameson Henshaw, USN and wife Lt. Hollie Cronley-Henshaw, USN are of Washington, DC. Jameson followed in his grandfather's footsteps in the U S Navy and is currently deployed on the USS George Washington. Chace Craig and wife L'nae are of Abilene. Chace recently completed graduate school at Texas A & M and is preparing for law school. Jordan Henshaw is of Washington, DC and is currently a civil engineer on a project in Sommerset, Massachusetts.
Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, August 2, in Trinity Peace Chapel in Trinity Memorial Park, 6900 S. Hwy 87, at Big Spring, Texas with Jim Craig officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 1, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene.
