Mildred Orene Verett Zickefoose

The sweet spirit of Millie Snowden Verett Zickefoose went to her Heavenly Father on September 7, 2021, at the age of 90. It is the family's understanding that Millie's wish is that there will be no funeral or memorial service. Her wish was to be cremated, with burial beside her first husband C.A. Verett in Ralls, Texas. Arrangements are handled by The Hamil Family Funeral Home in Abilene, with the family's appreciation to Kent Anderson. Millie was born September 6, 1931, in Haskell County, Texas to Lloyd and Ruby Snowden. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington and moved to Ralls, Texas in 1948, where she met C.A. Verett. They were married on December 17, 1949, and Millie became part of a loving extended family who always saw her as a "natural-born" Verett. C.A. and Millie farmed in Crosby County for 30 years. She and the family were faithful members of the Crosbyton Church of Christ. During this time, Millie and C.A. fostered several children from the Lubbock Children's Home. After their sons left home for college, C.A. and Millie served as house parents at the Children's Home for two years. They moved to Abilene in 1975, where she became Campus Center Hostess at Abilene Christian College. C.A. was on the staff of ACC/ACU. They attended Hillcrest Church of Christ, where she was still a member at her death. Millie was an avid tennis player, playing into her 70's and winning several women's double championships. She and Ben continued to enjoy watching tennis matches on television. They also shared multiple trips to summer camps, traveling in Ben's RV. Millie was preceded in death by C.A. Verett, her husband of almost 58 years; her parents, Lloyd and Ruby Snowden; a sister, Lola; and three brothers, Joe, Jack and Don Snowden. Also preceding her in death were six sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law and their spouses. She is survived by her husband of 10 years, Ben Zickefoose of Abilene, who was an amazing, attentive, loving husband and caretaker. She is survived by two sons, Vic Verett and wife Charlotte of Abilene and Kendall Verett of Phoenix, Arizona. Also surviving their "Granny" are three granddaughters, Jennifer Headrick and her husband Nathan of Abilene, Cara Phelps and her husband Warner of Spring, Texas, and Amy Booker and her husband Brandon of Richardson, Texas. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Hagan Headrick, Delton Phelps, Sloane Booker, Nora Booker, and Zane Booker.
