Mervin Owens, 72, passed away Friday, April 14, 2006 in Colorado City. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Sunday, April 16 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Monday at the funeral home, with Bill Luttrell, L. Arnold Watson and Terry Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mervin was born on May 28, 1933 in Sulphur, Oklahoma to Mervin Fred Owens, Sr. and Lahoma Jean Gillaspie. He graduated from high school in 1951 in Sherman, Texas and Abilene Christian College in 1955. He married Ava Irene Chipman on June 9, 1956 in San Angelo, Texas. He was employed as a postal clerk for 42 years for the United States Postal Service. Mervin moved to Abilene in 1974 from Brownwood. He was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ and the American Postal Workers Union. He was a big supporter of ACU sports. Mervin followed all of his children all over the country as their #1 fan of all of the various sports in which they participated.
Mervin was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Lohoma Owens of Mesquite; his wife, A.I. "Chic" Owens of Abilene; his son Ralph Wayne Owens and his wife Stephanie of Austin; his daughters, Donna Kay Nichols and her husband Mike of Colorado City, and Tammy Gail Owens of Abilene; one sister, Peggy Jean Clark of Sherman; six grandchildren, Jordan M. Owens, Jarrod M. Owens, Jocelyn M. Owens, Bradley A. Nichols, Nicole R. Wood and her husband Richard, and Jessica J. Nichols; one great-granddaughter, Abbigail M. Wood; several nieces, nephews, and aunts.
