Mattie Josephine Stroud

Mattie Josephine “Jo” Stroud, age 92, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on May 31, 2015 at Coronado Nursing Center in Abilene. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Interment will be in Pittsburg, Kansas at a later date. Mattie Jo was born in Elida, New Mexico to John V. and Emma Cothern on November 17, 1922. She graduated high school in Rich Hill, Missouri. She worked many years for both Texas Tech and Eastern New Mexico Universities. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Clovis, New Mexico. Mattie Jo was preceded in death by her parents John V. and Emma Cothern; Charles Robert Stone (husband); Bobby Joe Stroud (husband); William H. Cothern (brother); Mary E. Cothern (sister-in-law); Daman Cothern (nephew); William R. Cothern (nephew); and Christopher Joseph Stone (great-grandson). She is survived by her daughter Jean Conley and husband James of Abilene, Texas, and son Bob Stone and wife Gayle of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Grandchildren are Gloriana Bryan and husband Tommy of Waco, Texas; Dean Conley and wife Kellie of Tuscola, Texas; Cory Stone and wife Lisa of Spokane, Washington; and Amy Hodge and husband Steve of Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. Great-grandchildren are Clint Conley and wife Sarah of Abilene, Texas; Dillan Conley and wife Kali of Abilene, Texas; Wesley Bryan of Waco, Texas; Daivis Conley and fiancé John Gallagher of Lubbock, Texas; Andrew Bryan of Waco, Texas; and Kyle Hodge, Jay Hodge and Keely Hodge of Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. There are a number of nieces, nephews and cousins, whom also survive Mattie Jo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, TX 79605.
