Mary Bob Grimes, 85, a longtime resident of Abilene, died Friday, August 14, 2009, at an Abilene medical center.
The daughter of Annie Atwood Wilder Means and Robert (Bob) Madison Means, she was born on May 8, 1924 in Abilene, Texas. She spent her early childhood in Andrews, Texas, returning to Abilene where she graduated from Abilene High School. She attended S.M.U. where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and graduated from North Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.
Mary Bob married Marvin Leslie Grimes, Jr. on December 21, 1946 in Abilene. She was a homemaker.
She was proud of her ranching heritage and was an avid supporter of the National Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University. A cheerful giver and devout philanthropist, Mrs. Grimes was a supporter of the Salvation Army, Texas Trails Council of Boy Scouts of America, American Red Cross, United Way, the Noah Project, Serenity House of Abilene, Lake Brownwood Christian Retreat, and First Christian Church in Abilene of which she was a member. She was also a sustaining member of Junior League of Abilene. She was a volunteer teacher at West Texas Rehabilitation Center and a charter member of the Cattlemen's Round-Up for the Rehab. She loved painting and gardening.
She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Grimes, in 1984, and her parents.
Mary Bob is survived by her son, Bob Grimes and wife, Karen, of Buffalo Gap, Texas; daughters, Leslie Terbush and husband, Ed, of Abilene, Nancy Nichols and husband, John, of Fort Worth, and Cathy Grimes of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Christy Lemons and husband, Jim, Bobby Grimes and wife, Darby, Lee Terbush and wife, Keri, Jason Terbush and wife, Kristi, Carol Nichols and James Nichols; and five great-grandchildren. Survivors also include her sister, Margie Boles of Roswell, New Mexico, sister-in-law, Rosalie Grimes Bergman of Dunedin, Florida; several nieces; and caregiver and friend, Anna Valentine of Abilene.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 17, at First Christian Church officiated by Dr. Don C. Wilson. Interment will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
