Mary Louise Long passed away on August 23, 2014.
Mary was a longtime resident of the Abilene area. She was a devoted wife, mother and community volunteer.
Born on September 13, 1926, Mary grew up in Potosi and graduated from Wylie High School. She married her husband, John Long, in 1946. While raising her children, she was an active PTA volunteer. She worked at Wylie Schools as school secretary 21 years, helping countless students, parents, teachers and administrators.
After retirement, she volunteered at the Area Baptist Ministries, assisting families in need. She was an active member of Potosi Seniors and Home Demonstration Club. Living back on the farm she grew up on in Potosi, she enjoyed gardening and tending her pet cows. In 2008, Mary was inducted into the “Wylie Hall of Honor” for her years of dedication and service to Wylie Schools.
Mary was preceded in death by John Long, her husband of 68 years. Mary is survived by her daughter Kathleen Brasfield; son Randy Long and wife Jo; granddaughters Rebecca Long and Julie Long Day and husband Joe; and sister Verna Rathmell and husband Charles, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Honorary Pallbearers are Charles Rathmell, Donald Frank Blackburn, Don Warren, Ronnie Hobbs and Shiner Freeman.
Visitation will be Monday, August 25th from 5 to 7 PM at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside service will be at Potosi Cemetery on Tuesday, August 26th at 10 AM with Pastor John Fanning officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Potosi Cemetery, the Potosi Community Center, the Potosi Fire Department, or the charity of your choice.
