Mary LaVerne Hines

Mary LaVerne Lindsey Hines of Childress, Texas, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020, in Abilene, Texas. In light of the current COVID-19 situation, a memorial service will be held at a date to be announced when it is safe to gather. Mrs. Hines was born August 18, 1926, in rural Hardeman County, Texas, to Kitty and Joe Lindsey. She graduated Valedictorian from Williams High School in Hardeman County in 1943. She married Roy S. Hines in San Antonio on June 26, 1946, upon his discharge from the United States Army. Mrs. Hines was a member of First Baptist Church in Childress, Texas, where she was a member and teacher of the Esther Sunday School Class for many years. She was a long-time Board Member and devoted advocate of the Friends of the Library and served as Library Board President for several years. She was an active member of the Childress Arts Council, Woman’s Department Club, and the Childress County Old Settler’s Association, and served on the Board of Directors of the Childress County Heritage Museum. She was always active and giving in the Childress community, and for this she was awarded Woman of the Year in 1998 by the Childress Chamber of Commerce. Her yard full of bluebonnets brought joy annually to those passing by and is backdrop to many local family photographs. Mrs. Hines was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her parents; her brothers Jimmie and J.T. Lindsey of Quanah, and Gilbert Lindsey of Levelland; and a grandson, John Page Hines. She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Kay Hines Harman of Childress; her son, Frank Henry Hines and wife, Vickey E. Harmon Hines of Hardeman County; her grandchildren—Cara Hines and husband, Ernest Slatinsky; Mary Kay LeCroy, and husband, Mike; Roy Carter and wife, Chelsie; Daryl Harmon and wife Erin; her great-grandchildren—Lexi and Logan LeCroy, Elizabeth Harmon, and Olivia Hines; and Laura Lee Page Hines, mother of Cara and John. She is also survived by many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors. Remembrances may be made to the Childress Public Library, Childress Meals on Wheels, or to a charity of choice. The family would like to thank the many caregivers who provided quality, loving care over the past sixteen years, as well as those who sent cards and letters when Mrs. Hines was homebound. They were not always acknowledged, but they were all read and appreciated.
