Marietta Martin

1914 — January 29, 2016

Marietta Sessions Martin after living 101 years passed from her earthly home into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on January 29, 2016. Marietta was born in Brady, Texas on July 2, 1914, to Virgil Lee and Emma Angeline Sessions. She graduated from Brady High School in 1932 and attended Abilene Christian College. On August 25, 1933 she married James L. (Jimmie) Martin, of McCamey, Texas. They began their married life in McCamey where Jimmie was the managing editor of the McCamey News, the newspaper owned by his father J.L. Martin . During the war, they moved back to Brady, Texas. In 1945 they moved to Abilene where Jimmie was employed by West Texas Utilities Company as editor of their company publication, The Electric Times. Marietta was the homemaker where she provided a wonderful home life for her two daughters, Maralyn and Molly. She shared her talents for sewing, cooking and Christian service with family and friends. While living in Abilene, Marietta and Jimmie became lifelong members of Central Presbyterian Church which later became First Central Presbyterian Church. While active in many church activities she help organize and oversee the bereavement committee, and the Night Circle for Presbyterian Women's organization. She was honored with an Honorary membership of the Board of National Missions of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. for dedicated Christian Service. She was initiated into Chapter EK, P.E.O. Sisterhood in 1972. She and Jimmie enjoyed many years with friends in their Bridge Club, 24 Dinner Club and their neighborhood domino friends of 50 plus years. Marietta moved to Bridgeport, Texas in 2005, to be close to Maralyn and her children. Marietta is preceded in death by her parents, Virgil Lee and Emma Angeline Sessions; her husband of fifty years, Jimmie Martin; her sister Emma McNeely; and her brother Sam Hill Sessions. She is survived by her daughter Maralyn Harveson (husband, Wayne), Bridgeport, Texas and Molly Wyatt (husband,Keith), Fredericksburg ,Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren Robert (Bob) Harveson( wife, Tammy), Scottsbluff,Nebraska; Tony Harveson of Bridgeport TX.; Laurie Barker ( husband, Jim) Junction TX. ; Amy Atkinson ( husband, Danny) Portland, Tx.; Katherine Laird ( husband, Rick) Laporte, TX.; Rebecca Dueitt (husband, Drew) Corpus Christi, TX. and her great grandchildren: Anna & Abby Harveson ; Keaton & Emily Harveson; Mignon & Zane Barker; Dustin & Kaitlyn Atkinson; Courtland & Tyler Hellums; and Charlotte Dueitt. Marietta will be missed by many because of her loving spirit, sweet smile and Christian witness. Memorials may be given to First Central Presbyterian Church of Abilene, P.E.O. Sisterhood, First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport, TX. Services will be held on Monday, February 8. The interment will be at Elmwood Memorial Park at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service of celebration will follow at 11:00 a.m. at First Central Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday, February 7th at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene.
