Margaret Mae Magill McCarty, 90, of Abilene, passed away on Friday, March 11, 2016 in Abilene, Texas. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Thursday, March 17 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, March 18 at Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal with The Reverend Luke Back officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home. Margaret was born in Goldsboro, NC to Charles and Clara Magill on May 20, 1925. Immediately following high school graduation, she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, DC during World War II. She was a member of Sigma Pi Alpha and studying French at East Carolina Teachers’ College (now East Carolina University), when she met a young Marine stationed at the Cherry Point, NC Marine Air Base. She married Guy W. McCarty, Jr. on June 14, 1945 in Goldsboro, NC. They moved to Guy’s hometown of Abilene shortly thereafter with the promise that she would return to her home at least once a year. They had one child, Charles “Mark” McCarty. She was a homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, active volunteer and bridge player. Through the years, Margaret was involved in several bridge clubs, Junior League, PEO, Pensadoras, Thrift House, St. Margaret’s Book Store, West Texas Rehabilitation Center, Episcopal Church Women, and her most cherished role was as a member of the Altar Guild at Heavenly Rest. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband Guy, brother Charles Boyd Magill and niece Diane Magill. Margaret, affectionately known as “Moggo”, is survived by her son Mark, his wife Melinda, and grandson Marcus McCarty. She is also survived by grandsons and their families Kelly (Kirsten) Fry and daughters Hana and Grace of England; Chad (Liam) Fry and children Charlie, Emily, and Henry of Austin; and niece Linda (Bill) Sayre of Iowa. She is also survived by Melinda’s extended family, including Marilyn Smith of Abilene. Pallbearers will be Ronny Bryant, Sam Elliott, Chad Fry, Kelly Fry, Joe Galloway, Jim Leonard, Bush Ramsey, and David Spicer. Memorials may be given to Texas Leadership Charter Academy-Abilene library fund or the charity of your choice. Margaret’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Susan and David Spicer, Donna Gurnea, the entire Spicer family, Celeste Daugherty, Dr. Joseph Ferguson and Hendrick Hospice for their love and care of Margaret. “Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
